David celebrates 30 years of work at AEA!

David Hepinstall celebrates his 30th anniversary with AEA this year. He’s worked tirelessly advocating for residents of affordable housing, developing a state of the art training program, and providing leadership as Executive Director of The Association of Energy Affordability. His passion is unmatched, and we are grateful for his work and dedication over the years. David has decided to step down from his position as Executive Director but will remain part of AEA in his new role of Senior Policy Advisor. Included are highlights from David’s career that illustrate his impact locally and at a state-wide level. Thank you, David!

  • David led AEA as an implementation partner in NYSERDA’s Assisted Multifamily Program (AMP) from 2002 – 2007. David’s input on program design has laid the foundation for many programs since, including NYSERDA’s Multifamily Performance Program.
  • When NYSERDA began its ENERGY STAR® Multifamily Pilot (EMP) Program to assist new construction projects, David led AEA to provide guidance in the specification and construction of new multifamily housing using the criteria of an ENERGY STAR® label. AEA was a partner in bringing 6 of the 12 initial projects through this pilot program, which paved the way for the New Construction component of NYSERDA’s MPP program.
  • David led the development of AEA’s Training Center which has educated, inspired, and fostered the development of future leaders. A roster of AEA training staff and alumni are filled with the names of recognized leaders in home performance and building performance.
  • During ARRA alone (2009‐2012), David directed over $30m of program funds that served nearly 5,000 units of low‐income housing in Greater New York City.
  • David’s had a leadership role at Building Performance Institute since its inception, serving as its Treasurer for 10 years and Board Chair from 2009.
  • Co‐directed and co‐authored Multifamily Retrofit Research study co‐funded by NYSERDA and DHCR to assess changes in building dynamics and performance resulting from the installation of energy‐efficient and health and safety retrofits.
  • As lead organizer of the National Multifamily Buildings Conference series since 1996, David has worked to convene gatherings of energy efficiency professionals to focus on challenges in the industry.
  • David’s leadership is reflected by his role on the Management Committee of the New York Independent System Operator and member of NYSERDA’s System Benefits Charge Advisory Group. Along with his participation in all the following:
    • Over 10 years on NYC Energy Policy Task Force
    • 3 years on NYC Green Jobs/Green New York Advisory Council
    • 3 years on New York State Governor’s Renewable Energy Task Force
    • 10 years on NYSERDA System Benefits Charge Advisory Group
    • Member of California Energy Efficiency Industry Council since 2010
