Background. The first conference on multifamily energy efficiency was organized b.y the Association for Energy Affordability, Inc. in New York City in 1996 with the support of the US Department of Energy (DOE), the National Center for Appropriate Technology and the NYS Division of Weatherization Services as co-sponsors. Technical experts and practitioners from across the US gathered at the conference, many of them meeting for the first time. It was a momentous development for multifamily energy actors, whose customers’ needs and interests were rarely the focus of those addressing small residential or commercial properties. Subsequently, at the urging of DOE and others,AEA has organized the conference with NYSERDA support as a Sustaining Platinum Sponsor, joined for each conference by sponsors including utilities, energy efficiency consultants, government agencies, and nonprofit and media partners.
